New Shooters Welcome!
Eldorado Cowboys | SASS Affiliated Club
Whether you've never held a single-action revolver or you're ready to ride at full speed, the Eldorado Cowboys want you here. Membership is NOT required to come out and shoot with us — just show up, watch, ask questions, and have a great time.
Come Shoot With Us!
Cowboy Action Shooting is one of the most welcoming shooting sports around. You'll find our members ready to share their knowledge, loan you gear to try, and cheer you on every step of the way. Come out to the range. There's a place for you here.
Your First Visit
Just Come Watch
You are 100% welcome to come out to any monthly match, watch the action, and soak it all in.
Walk the stages, watch competitors shoot, and get a feel for how everything works. Our members love talking about the sport — someone will be happy to walk you through what's happening and answer any questions.
Bring Your Gear & Shoot
Already own guns that might work for cowboy action? Bring them out and give it a try!
Our range officers and members will help you understand the rules, stage layout, and safety procedures before you shoot. Trying it out is the best way to know if it's right for you — and it almost always is.
No Gear? No Problem
You don't need to own a single thing to come out and experience cowboy action shooting.
We'll put guns in your hands and walk you through everything in a safe, relaxed, hands-on introduction session. See the gear section below for what you'll eventually need if you decide to get started.
Don't Have Equipment Yet?
We will provide a hands-on introduction to Cowboy Action Shooting for any new or interested shooter. We can put guns in your hands, show you how it all works, and help you figure out what you'd want to own. Just let us know you're coming so we can be ready to help — use the contact link below or send us an email.
Events & Clinics
We hold regular events specifically designed for new and improving shooters. Here's what to look for.

ALL SKILL LEVELS
Transition Clinic
Looking to up your game and become a faster, more accurate shooter? We regularly hold transition clinics focused on technique, stage strategy, and the fundamentals of competitive cowboy action shooting. Open to everyone from newer shooters to seasoned competitors.
📍 Saturday · After the monthly match
Just Let Us Know You're Coming
If you plan to attend the intro session or transition clinic, please reach out ahead of time so we can have the right people, gear, and time set aside for you. You're also welcome to just show up on Saturday after the match — we won't turn anyone away — but a heads-up helps us give you the best experience possible.
What You'll Need
Cowboy Action Shooting uses a specific set of firearms and gear. Here's a breakdown of what's required and what's optional. Don't feel like you have to buy everything at once — talk to our members first. They've already made all the mistakes so you don't have to.
Required Firearms
- Two single-action revolvers — most competitors use .38 or .45 caliber
- One lever-action rifle — chambered for a pistol caliber (e.g. .38, .44, .45)
- One shotgun — side-by-side, over/under, or Winchester 1897-style pump
Required Gear & Clothing
- Dress/clothing — Check the SASS website for clothing specifics.
- Cowboy alias — your unique SASS character name
- Eye & ear protection — mandatory on the range at all times
- Holster rig — belt and holsters appropriate to your shooting category
Ammunition
- Lead (non-jacketed) bullets required — no hollow points or jacketed rounds
- Many competitors reload their own ammo to save money and customize loads
- Factory cowboy loads are available at most gun stores
- Ask a member for current ammo recommendations
Good to Know
- SASS membership is required for sanctioned competition — visit sassnet.com to register
- You can shoot with us without a SASS number while you're getting started
- Many categories exist — find one that fits your style and budget
- Talk to members before buying anything — advice is always free
